Failing in Class 10th board exams can feel disappointing, stressful, and confusing — but it does not mean the end of education. Many students fail due to exam pressure, illness, lack of confidence, change of school, personal problems, or simply because they need more time to learn. The NIOS On-Demand Exam for Class 10 is a lifeline for students who failed in Class 10th. It gives a chance to restart education without repeating the whole year.

To help such students continue their studies without wasting a whole year, the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) offers a unique opportunity called the On-Demand Examination System (ODES).
This system allows Class 10th failed students to reappear only in the subjects they failed and pass Class 10 without waiting for the next academic year.

NIOS On-Demand Exam 2026 class 10th is an option for students who failed in class 10th board exams in 2025 or 2026. Students can apply for Admission in this course to appear for the exam in the same year. It is a golden chance for these students to save the precious year.

The On-Demand Exam (ODE) is a special examination system that allows Class 10th students who failed to reappear in failed subjects in the same year.

To apply for the 10th Class on Demand exam, all the following documents are required:
NIOS allows students to keep the marks of subjects they already passed in the previous board. Students can claim credit transfer for up to 2 subjects. This reduces the number of subjects a student needs to pass, since they must pass at least 5. If two subjects are transferred, students need to appear for only three subjects. Here, if they feel it is challenging to pass any subject, the Nios board offers the option to switch to an easier subject, and the student can take it. This facility by the Nios board makes it easy for students to pass the 10th board exams easily with less burden.
Students applying for the NIOS on Demand exam for class 10 can check the list of available subjects. This Nios on-demand exam Class 10 list can be divided into two parts: language subjects and academic subjects.
Language Subjects
Students can choose one or up to two language subjects. Subjects available are Hindi(201), English (202), and Sanskrit (209)
Academic Subjects
From this list of academic subjects, students can choose at least three subjects if two languages are taken, or four subjects if one language is taken. If the student is taking advantage of the credit transfer scheme, the number of subjects selected for exams will be reduced.
Students can choose subjects for exams from the acadmic subjects Mathematics (211), Science & Technology (212), Social Science (213), Economics (214), Business studies (215), Psychology (222), Home Science (216), Indian Culture & Heritage (223), Accountancy (224), Painting (225), Sanskrit Sahitya(248), Data Entry Operations(229), Bharatiya Darshan(247).
If students take any of the following subjects, they have to also appear for the Practical exams. Nios 10th class on-demand exam, practical exam subjects list, and their practical marks list are given below.
The Mathematics (211) Subject has a practical component of 15 marks and a theory exam of 85 marks.
The Science &Technology(212) Subject have Practical marks 15 and theory exam is of 85 marks.
The Home Science (216) Subject has a practical component worth 15 marks and a theory exam worth 85 marks.
The Painting (225) Subject has Practical marks of 70 and Theory marks of 30.
The Data Entry Operations (229) Subject have Practical marks 60 and theory exam is of 40 marks.
Practical marks are added to the final result, and practical exams are conducted separately.
Unlike regular board exams, ODE is available all year except during the Public exams of Nios board, generally in March/April, and September/October and Major festival holidays in India. Nios on-demand exam Class 10th dates start after the Nios board public exam results are announced. Here, Nios old students who failed in Public exams and new students who failed in the 10th board exams can apply for the Nios on-demand exam for class 10th. Students can choose the date and attempt one subject at a time or multiple subjects.
